More bilingual classrooms being added to The East Moline School District
| There are 42 languages spoken by students in Rock Island County schools, presenting staffing and financial challenges to districts that must provide students with specialized services. However, district officials said the services better help the students transition into English-only classrooms and assist in providing a better education. The East Moline School District, where 13 foreign languages are spoken by students attending the five schools, has recently added another bilingual classroom and more bilingual staff to better meet the needs of students. |

Volunteers needed for ESL project
|
The senior center is working on a new project with Austin High School’s English as a second language class. The center will host an “Intergenerational Diversity Project” from 10 a.m. to noon June 13. Students from the ESL class are enrolled in summer school. The center’s goal is to find seniors to work with these ninth-grade children on a social level. We hope to accomplish this through playing games such as checkers, Yahtzee, chess and puzzles. These activities should also help students improve their reading skills. Volunteers will help students practice their writing, English and listening skills. |

Choice ‘not aiding black pupils’
|
Researchers based their findings on in-depth interviews and discussion groups with 177 black parents in three local authority areas – as well as on written questionnaires. They found that because many parents find it difficult to exercise choice, they downgrade their options before selecting schools. Those with tended to choose the school closest to them – although some would travel some distance to single sex schools. Parents trying to get their children into schools in local authority areas with a high number of schools that control their own admissions, found the process especially difficult, the report said. |

Australia Government Targets “Language Crisis”
| From primary school to year 10, students would be required to study a second language as part of a national push by university chiefs to stem the language “crisis” in schools. Under the plan, all year 12 graduates would also get a 10 per cent bonus on their university entry scores if they successfully complete a language other than English in their final year at school. The Group of Eight leading research universities yesterday called for immediate action by state and federal governments if Australia was to avoid the economic and national security consequences of becoming a “monolingual nation”. |

Non-traditional students thrive despite obstacles in ESL
|
“Sometimes the children could speak very good English but the parents wanted to be able to improve their English, so they were coming on their own so they could learn better. That was inspirational because they were very motivated to learn English. They were very serious about it, with a strong drive to learn,” Charles said. He worked with a mix of six or seven students who would come on a regular basis to each class. After that, Charles knew his calling would be working with those for whom English is a second language. “It was just a lot of fun working one-on-one with students. It sparked my interest. And talking to Sue, she said it was a really good profession and something that I would like,” Charles said. |
