The Standard Deviants - Learn English as a Second Language (ESL) DVD 4-Pack

Edmonds is an elementary school in Burnaby that serves some 350 students. The children hail from 48 countries. Half its students are ESL; one in eight are refugees. Many of the newcomers share the bond of fear and trauma: They have been hit by bullets, fled war on foot and volunteered starvation to help their parents save money.

Their stories provide Edmonds with a rich, but complicated, landscape. If reading and writing are the golden standards by which student success is measured, then Edmonds has earned the unenviable reputation as one of the worst-performing schools in the province — and the worst in the middle-class suburb of Burnaby. The Hispanic Resource Center (HRC) and the Mamaroneck School District have agreed to work together to launch an expanded evening English as a Second Language (ESL) program in the Mamaroneck Avenue School. It will benefit both children and a large group of local adult immigrants who have found it difficult to attend other ESL classes because of problems with child care, demanding work schedules and transportation.

The announcement came from Mariana Boneo, executive director of HRC, and Carrie Amon, principal of the Mamaroneck Ave. School. The news comes as HRC completes plans for its November 6th fiesta fundraiser at the Hampshire Country Club which will honor its ESL volunteers. (more…)

American Business English/ESL: The Fundamentals

It’s a challenge many Spanish-speaking students face inside the classroom, but a local educator is making lesson plans easier to understand, one word at a time. “I have no children so I feel like they are my children,” she said. As part of the ESL or English as a second language - program, Elvira is making sure each student fully understands what’s going on in the classroom. (more…)

“Should the state tests like the Missouri Assessment Program be given by teachers to their own students?”

If classroom teachers did not give tests to their own students, who would do that job? Would we pay people to come into the classroom and administer tests? Where would we find enough qualified people to do that?

Entirely too much emphasis is placed on these high-stakes tests, and that is the first problem. The tests cost school districts funding that could be used for good books.

The books would help children learn. The tests do not help children learn. They might identify students who need extra help. But the tests are needed to qualify for extra money for tutoring. If that tutoring could be accessed without testing, money could be saved. (more…)

The Standard Deviants - Learn English as a Second Language (ESL) - Possessives, Verb + Infinitive, and the Past

When first-year teacher Cassidy Kitcheyan finds herself overwhelmed by the demands of her job, she knows help is just an e-mail away.

The Haskell Indian Nations University graduate is a first-grade teacher at Hillcrest School, and she relies on the help of the Lawrence school district’s learning coach program.

The program is an initiative launched this year to assist teachers — rookies and veterans — in professional development.

“They definitely are a big part of my new career not being so hectic,” Kitcheyan, 23, said. “I don’t feel so crazy as I thought I would. In a way, they are lifesavers, along with my mentor.” (more…)
