Don Kessler doesn’t pretend to be anything he’s not, a basic what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of guy. But ask him about language, and he’s likely to bubble over with enthusiasm. Kessler’s zeal for the spoken word led him to become self-taught in German before moving on to Spanish and using those skills to help other people learn English.

“I’m just an average guy with average intelligence,” Kessler said. “I’ve been a language nut all my life. It’s been great.” Clients of Fox Valley Literacy Coalition are beneficiaries of Kessler’s enthusiasm. A volunteer tutor with the FVLC for a year, Kessler works with multiple students at a time to help them learn and improve their English.
