Here are some tips from experts for parents who want to encourage a child’s acquisition of a second language, start with your school system. Miami-Dade public schools serve up a variety of programs, from Spanish for Spanish speakers to special bilingual schools to extended foreign language programs.

In Broward public schools, most students get their first classroom exposure to Spanish in middle school. Nine languages are offered at the high school level. In addition, four elementary magnets offer more language instruction in Spanish, French, Chinese and Japanese, and 31 others include a daily half-hour of language instruction through the Foreign Language Exposure (FLEX) program.
