Teachers can find more job opportunities in high school math, bilingual, English language learners (English as a Second Language) and special education, she said. Teachers with elementary education certificates, especially majoring in English and social studies, may have the toughest searches.

“Every year, there are (only) a few jobs for elementary teachers because of retirements,” said Bloomington District 87 Superintendent Bob Nielsen.

There also are more choices for teachers willing to relocate. “Rural and smaller communities have as much need as ever,” Curtis said.
