Mission teaches English to newcomers
In April, the Bridge Hispanic Mission in Hickory celebrated its first graduation.
Eight people had completed the Bridge’s five required semesters of English as a Second Language, so during Family Fiesta, a cross-cultural event that takes place at the conclusion of each semester, the graduates received their certificates.
“Now I can communicate more with my children’s teachers, at doctor’s appointments and with people at work,” said Clara Martinez, who began studying and practicing English soon after the ministry was officially launched in 2009. It is supported by several area Lutheran churches and directed by the Rev. Brandon Martin, associate pastor at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Hickory.

ESL teachers about to become hot commodity
Stephanie Beam doesn’t graduate from university till June, but already she’s received plenty of offers of teaching work.
Beam, 26, is finishing her Bachelor of Education degree at Concordia University. Three of the teaching offers came after she got her Bachelor of Arts degree, when she had no formal teacher training. The rest came as she studied to be a teacher.
Beam is a teaching substitute at an elementary school, and she’s looking at two possibilities for the fall: working at a private high school or teaching in England.

ESL STudents At Mt. Garfield MS
Mt. Garfield is located between Clifton and Palisade, but the address is listed as Clifton.
The school has around 25 percent minority students, and many of them are learning English as a second language.
The ESL program, or English as a Second Language program, gives these students a class designed to accelerate their education in the English Language Arts. ESL teacher Lauren Dominguez tells her students to write their lessons in English, then they stand up and talk about their work with each other in small groups. (more…)

Students Exhibit ESL Skills
The 25th annual Concours d’art oratoire, the provincial French public speaking competition for students studying French as a second language in Core French and French Immersion programs were held recently at l’UniversitĂ© de Moncton, Pavillon Jeanne-de-Valois, with 110 students from nine of the provincial English school districts participating. A number of students from this area excelled.
Noah Carter of J.M.A. Armstrong/Salisbury Middle School placed third in the Grade 6 Early French Immersion category.
Laura Jones of Evergreen Park School, placed first in Grade 7 Early French Immersion and Ben Steeper of Bessborough School won in Grade 8 Early French Immersion. Grade 8 Late French Immersion was won by Luke Steeves of Hillcrest School. (more…)
